With the introduction of the DB series classification table on 1 January 1968, the powered end carriages of the VT 11.5 were renumbered to the 601 class, the middle carriages to the 901 class. In 1971, the Deutsche Bundesbahn established the Intercity system as a city express traffic system with 1st class vehicles and a two-hour interval. On average, six units were in service each day. After a conversion in 1980, the locomotive operated in special tourist traffic ("Alpen-See-Express").
