Their maximum speed was 80 km/h forward and 50 km/h reverse. Some of these already very powerful engines were further improved by the German Federal Railways to 2,100 hp (1,546 kW) when they were converted to oil combustion from 1955. From 1968, DB oil-fired locomotives received the class designation 043.
