It was a joint venture between SBB and Trenitalia. Cisalpino, abbreviated to CIS, was both the name of the company and the trains it operated. The company operated standard locomotive-hauled trains for several rail connections between Switzerland and Italy. These were mainly built using SBB EuroCity high-capacity coaches and other FS coach types. Some of these received a Cisalpino livery.
